About

“Beirut Summer School for Theater & Performance '' (BSSTP), founded in 2021, is a school that involves a series of theater and performance workshops conducted by renowned practitioners in Lebanon who share their experiences, working methods, and perspectives within their own practice. The school includes workshops in Acting, Directing, Dance, Improvisation, Light Design, Scenography, Costume Design, Documentation, and Writing about Theater among other subjects.
The Beirut Summer School for Theater & Performance (Summer 2022) is supported by the Spanish Embassy in Lebanon, Mansion, Studio Laban, Houna Center, & Ettijahat.
This school was initiated and programmed by alaa minawi.

Who can join

Theater and performance arts fresh graduates, students in their last years of study, and new professional practitioners are the main targeted group. Individuals who have been around the theater and performance arts field and would like to be exposed to different perspectives in the arts are welcome to join. People who aim at becoming director/ makers would benefit the most from the school's program as they would be exposed to various practices within the theater and performance field. Interested applicants would be asked to have a future project in mind. Examples. I am planning to direct a play next year, or I am going to be the sound designer of a performance soon, or I am going to perform next year. having a project would allow the workshop conductors to incorporate these projects in the workshops.

Curated Lunches

What are curated lunches?
Every Saturday, the school will invite a prominent practitioner in the theater and performance arts field in Lebanon to discuss their practice while cooking lunch for them and the workshop participants. The names of the guests will be announced at a later stage.

Discussion Sessions
with Anas Younes

Every Sunday during the summer school, Anas Younes Moderates a Discussion Session around various topics related to theater.
Anas Younes is a Theatre practitioner, cultural activist, and puppeteer. Anas joined the Koon team at the beginning of 2020. He produced two applied performances in alternative spaces. He is also working with Laban cultural organization as a development manager on the cultural administration and artistic consultancy levels. Anas graduated from AUL University, majored in drama and literature, and is now finishing his MA in theatre studies at USJ.

What are the fees

This school is free of charge. The applicants do not have to pay any fees. The only requirement is that if you apply you commit to attending the times and days of the workshops.
If you feel that you cannot commit to all the times and dates of the school for any reason please do not apply.

What is the application process

- We can receive a maximum of 80 Application.
- A committee will short list 24 Applicants in phase one.
- The workshop conductors will select the final 12 Applicants.

When does the application process start

Submission of applications starts on 02 May 2022 and closes on 15 May 2022
Results will be announced by end of May 2022
