2048 is an installation that questions the notion of belonging and challenges the spectators to venture through what this term means to them on the personal and universal level. it is constructed as a tool to develop the ongoing artistic research that alaa minawi has started since 2016 about belonging and its relationship to physical spaces. the installation itself is still open to further development and with every time it is presented the collected answers and feedbacks from the spectators are included in the development process of the research.

concept

a machine came from the year 2048 to fall in the exhibition space. it is covered by anti-contamination plastic that forms a maze through which the spectator pass to reach four rooms where the machine asks about belonging. the machine wants to know what is belonging since in the year 2048 belonging and belonging do not exist anymore. the questions vary from philosophical, theoretical, to personal ones.
4 to 6 people are invited at a time for a 15-20 min experience,

spectator experience

The main objective of the installation is to transport the spectator through a transitional phase (the maze), from their space to a space where they are comfortable enough to answer questions that are asked by a machine. The installation hopes that the spectator feels comfortable enough to reach out his/her own personal experience of belonging and aspirations about it.
