a performative installation by alaa minawi

Picture

details

title: 2048 - bodies borders belonging
form: performative installation
duration: 55 minutes
capacity: 34 spectators

presentation: amsterdam fringe festival - compagnietheater - amsterdam the netherlands
september 2019

concept

alaa was in the exhibition room before the audience went in – he has performed certain rituals there. through these rituals, he was able to achieve total belonging and now he will be sharing them with the spectators. the only down side is that he can no longer be physically present with them. So he left them a recording.
there are two spectator experiences happening at the same time. the performative installation consists of two spectator experiences. with a total of 34 spectators per/ performance.

spectator experience

experience one (30 spectator) - 55 minutes
hosts 30 spectators in space 1 (three sand boxes - around each sand box 8 chairs facing each other - inside of the sand box two spectators sit on the sand).

a group that will be experiencing the rituals to achieve total belonging, which involves a meditative process followed by questions about their childhood spaces, their own constructs of what belonging is and a continuous attempt to erase ones own foot prints on the sand.

experience two (4 spectator) - 50 minutes
hosts 4 spectators in space 2 (four chairs looking through each of the four windows and with headphones on)
it is a more intimate secluded experience with only four of the spectators who will be hearing, through headphones, very intimate experiences of alaa about him being labeled as a refugee, then unknown, then stateless.
