About“Beirut Summer School for Theater & Performance '' (BSSTP), founded in 2021, is a school that involves a series of theater and performance workshops conducted by renowned practitioners in Lebanon who share their experiences, working methods, and perspectives within their own practice. The school includes workshops in Acting, Directing, Dance, Improvisation, Light Design, Scenography, Costume Design, Documentation, and Writing about Theater among other subjects. This school was initiated and programmed by alaa minawi.

Target GroupTheater and performance arts students in their last years of study, fresh graduates, and young professional practitioners are the main targeted group. Individuals who have been around the theater and performance arts field and would like to be exposed to different perspectives in the arts are welcome to join. The school is also open to any participants who have less prior experience in theater but quite interested in the subject matter.
Process An open call to apply for the school takes place within the month of April / May. The selection is based on the application, the CV, and the motivation letter submitted by the applicants. The selection process consists of two phases: the first is conducted by a committee of three experts in the field of performance who will shortlist 25 applicants. The second selection phase is done by all the workshop conductors who will choose the final participants. The selection will mainly focus on how much the school’s program can be an added value to the applicant’s theater path and how much the selected group can benefit from each other. The selection takes gender equality representation into consideration. Applicants are welcomed regardless of their nationality, identity, and/or orientation.
ProgramThe program lasts for a span of five to six weeks within the months of June - July of each year in more than one alternative theatrical space within the city of Beirut. In summer 2021 the Beirut Summer School took place in Studio Laban & Huna Center.
The program consists of: A- Workshops Programing up to ten workshops that tackle the subjects of Acting, Directing, Dance, Improvisation, Light Design, Scenography, Costumes Design, Documentation, and writing about theater. Each workshop would take 3 to 5 days and spans between 3 to 4 hours a day. B- Focus group discussions/sharing knowledge over curated dinners At the end of the last workshop in each week MFA in theatre & movement/street theatre director Lama Al Amin invites a prominent practitioner in the theater and performance arts field in Lebanon to discuss their practice while cooking dinner for them and for the workshop participants. All participants are automatically welcomed to join these dinners without registration. The aim of the curated dinner is to create a non-formal environment of sharing knowledge in addition to building connections between the participants and the invitees C- Mentorship program After the summer school program ends, the participants can apply for the mentorship program that operates as follows: If any of the participants have a theater project planned within the year after the summer school ends whether it is light design, acting, directing, etc... They can apply and choose one of the workshop TuitionThe Summer School For Theater & Performance is free of charge, participants do not pay any fees. Participants are only asked to commit to be present through out the whole school program and to come on time. The school takes attendance and punctuality very seriously. We advise interested parties who cannot commit to the times and dates of all the workshop for any reason not to apply. The school financially supports the accepted participants with their transportation costs
